“Fascinating. Doidge’s book is a remarkable and hopeful portrait of the endless adaptability of the human brain.” ―Oliver Sacks

The discovery that our thoughts can change the structure and function of our brains―even into old age―is the most important breakthrough in neuroscience in four centuries. In this revolutionary look at the brain, bestselling author, psychiatrist, and psychoanalyst Norman Doidge, M.D., introduces both the brilliant scientists championing this new science of neuroplasticity and the astonishing progress of the people whose lives they’ve transformed. Introducing principles we can all use as well as a riveting collection of case histories―stroke patients cured, a woman with half a brain that rewired itself to work as a whole, learning and emotional disorders overcome, IQs raised, and aging brains rejuvenated―The Brain That Changes Itself has “implications for all human beings, not to mention human culture, human learning and human history” (The New York Times).

“Readers will want to read entire sections aloud and pass the book on to someone who can benefit from it….Links scientific experimentation with personal triumph in a way that inspires awe.” ―The Washington Post

A History of Public Health Info

.

Since publication in 1958, George Rosen’s classic book has been regarded as the essential international history of public health. Describing the development of public health in classical Greece, imperial Rome, England, Europe, the United States, and elsewhere, Rosen illuminates the lives and contributions of the field’s great figures. He considers such community health problems as infectious disease, water supply and sewage disposal, maternal and child health, nutrition, and occupational disease and injury. And he assesses the public health landscape of health education, public health administration, epidemiological theory, communicable disease control, medical care, statistics, public policy, and medical geography.

Rosen, writing in the 1950s, may have had good reason to believe that infectious diseases would soon be conquered. But as Dr. Pascal James Imperato writes in the new foreword to this edition, infectious disease remains a grave threat. Globalization, antibiotic resistance, and the emergence of new pathogens and the reemergence of old ones, have returned public health efforts to the basics: preventing and controlling chronic and communicable diseases and shoring up public health infrastructures that provide potable water, sewage disposal, sanitary environments, and safe food and drug supplies to populations around the globe.

A revised introduction by Elizabeth Fee frames the book within the context of the historiography of public health past, present, and future, and an updated bibliography by Edward T. Morman includes significant books on public health history published between 1958 and 2014. For seasoned professionals as well as students, A History of Public Health is visionary and essential reading.

Brush with Death: A Social History of Lead Poisoning Info

.

During the twentieth century, lead poisoning killed thousands of workers and children in the United States. Thousands who survived lead poisoning were left physically crippled or were robbed of mental faculties and years of life. In Brush with Death, social historian Christian Warren offers the first comprehensive history of lead poisoning in the United States. Focusing on lead paint and leaded gasoline, Warren distinguishes three primary modes of exposure--occupational, pediatric, and environmental. This threefold perspective permits a nuanced exploration of the regulatory mechanisms, medical technologies, and epidemiological tools that arose in response to lead poisoning.

Today, many children undergo aggressive "deleading" treatments when their blood-lead levels are well below the average blood-lead levels found in urban children in the 1950s. Warren links the repeated redefinition of lead poisoning to changing attitudes toward health, safety, and risk. The same changes that transformed the social construction of lead poisoning also transformed medicine and health care, giving rise to modern environmentalism and fundamentally altered jurisprudence.

An examination of the medical experiences of African AmericansDuring the days of slavery in America, racism and often-faulty medical theories contributed to an atmosphere in which African Americans were seen as chattel: some white physicians claimed that African Americans had physiological and anatomical differences that made them well suited for slavery. These attitudes continued into the Reconstruction and Jim Crow eras.In Race and Medicine historian Todd Savitt presents revised and updated versions of his seminal essays on the medical history of African Americans in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, especially in the South. This collection examines a variety of aspects of African American medical history, including health and illnesses, medical experimentation, early medical schools and medical professionals, and slave life insurance.Savitt examines the history of sickle-cell anemia and identifies the first two patients with the disease noted in medical literature. He proposes an explanation of why the disease was not well known in the general African American population for at least 50 years after its discovery. He also explains why African Americans developed elephantiasis in the Charleston Low Country and not elsewhere in the country. Other topics Savitt explores include African American medical schools, the formation of an African American medical profession, and SIDS among Virginia slaves. With its new research data and interpretations of existing materials, Race and Medicine will be a valuable resource to those interested in the history of medicine and African American history as well as to the medical community..

A Pest in the Land: New World Epidemics in a Global Perspective (Di Logos) Info

.

This study of disease among the native peoples of the New World before and after 1492 challenges many widely held notions about encounters between European and native peoples. Whereas many late twentieth century scholars blamed the catastrophic decline of postconquest native populations on the introduction of previously unknown infections from the Old World, Alchon argues that the experiences of native peoples in the New World closely resembled those of other human populations. Exposure to lethal new infections resulted in rates of morbidity and mortality among native Americans comparable to tose found among Old World populations.

Why then did native American populations decline by 75 to 90 percent in the century following contact with Europeans? Why did these populations fail to recover, in contrast to those of Africa, Asia, and Europe? Alchon points to the practices of European colonialism. Warfare and slavery increased mortality, and forced migrations undermined social, political, and economic institutions.

This timely study effectively overturns the notion of New World exceptionalism. By showing that native Americans were not uniquely affected by European diseases, Alchon also undercuts the stereotypical notion of the Americas as a new Eden, free of disease and violence until the intrusion of germ-laden, rapacious Europeans.

The Speckled Monster: A Historical Tale of Battling the Smallpox Epidemic Description

.

A timely book about history's first desperate efforts to conquer the spotted beast of smallpox.

What is it like to be caught in the terror and chaos of a smallpox epidemic when you and those you love are unprotected? What is it like to get smallpox, or to watch your children battle the disease?

The Speckled Monster tells the dramatic story-both historical and timely-of two parents who dared to fight back against the disease. After barely surviving the agony of smallpox themselves, they both flouted eighteenth-century European medical tradition by borrowing folk knowledge from African slaves and eastern women in frantic bids to protect their children. From their heroic struggles stem the modern science of immunology as well as the vaccinations that remain our only hope should the disease ever be unleashed again.

Jennifer Lee Carrell transports readers back to the early eighteenth century to tell the tales of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu and Dr. Zabdiel Boylston: two iconoclastic figures who helped save the cities of London and Boston from the deadliest disease mankind has known..

The Blood and its Third Element La revue

.

This book is the last work by Professor Antoine Béchamp, a man who should, by rights, be regarded today as one of the founders of modern medicine and biology. During his long career as an academic and researcher in nineteenth century France, Béchamp was widely known and respected as both a teacher and a researcher. As a leading academic, his work was well documented in scientific circles. Few made as much use of this fact as Louis Pasteur, who based much of his career on plagiarising and distorting Béchamp's research; in doing so, Pasteur secured for himself an undeserved place in the history of medical science. The Blood and its Third Element is Béchamp's explanation of his position, and his defense of it against Pasteur's mischief. This final major work of Béchamp's embodies the culmination of his life's research. This book contains, in detail, the elements of the microzymian theory of the organization of living organisms and organic materials. It has immediate and far reaching relevance to the fields of immunology, bacteriology, and cellular biology; and it shows that more than 100 years ago, the germ, or microbian, theory of disease was demonstrated by Béchamp to be without foundation. There is no single cause of disease. The ancients thought this, and Béchamp proved it and was written out of history for his trouble. The relevance of his work to the dilemmas that plague modern medical science remains as yet unrealized. This is a new edition of this title. The text has been extensively re-edited for today's reader..

By keeping your metabolism guessing in this specific and deliberate way, you’ll get it working faster. This isn’t just a theory, it’s the results-based product of Haylie Pomroy’s successful programs.  It’s worked for celebrities, for athletes, and for people with chronic illnesses who need to lose weight, doctor’s orders.  Now it’s going to work for you.

Q&A with Haylie Pomroy

Haylie Pomroy

Q. Why is metabolism so important?

A. First of all, metabolism isn’t a thing—it’s a process! It’s how your body converts food into either fuel or body substance (muscle, fat, bone, blood). If you have a fast metabolism, your body easily processes nutrients into heat and energy, or into creating a strong body. If you’ve got a slow metabolism, you’re storing—instead of burning—and more of your food ends up stuck to your thighs and belly as fat. The good news is that you can CHANGE your metabolism by eating the right foods.

Q. In the book you talk about the importance of switching up what you eat and how it can help you lose weight. Can you explain?

A. To start fixing your broken-down metabolism and lose weight, you’ve got to re-train it: You have to confuse it to lose it. And by eating the right nutrient-dense whole foods on the right days and at the right times, that’s exactly how you’ll get your metabolism burning fast and hot, like it should be.

It sounds like magic, but it’s really just good, solid science. The book is the product of 20 years of clinical experience, of helping people lose weight and keep it off. It’s worked for my clients—many of them athletes and celebrities—and it can work for you too. Each phase of the diet—and the specific foods within that phase—sets off precise reactions in your body, coaxing it to unlock and burn fat. It’s the constant switcheroo that forces your metabolism to get going again!

  • Phase One focuses on fruit and whole grains
  • Phase Two emphasizes alkalizing veggies and lean proteins
  • Phase Three balances proteins, veggies, fruit, and whole grains, plus healthy fats

Q. And I don’t have to count calories?

A. Nope! Your metabolism doesn't count calories and neither should you, as long as you follow the diet's guidelines for which foods to eat and when to eat them. A "calorie" has nothing to do with your weight or metabolism; it's actually a unit of measure—the amount of energy it takes to raise the temperature of one gram of water one degree Celsius!

Q. Is this diet really for everybody?

A. The Fast Metabolism lifestyle is the way we SHOULD be eating all the time, not just for the 28-day course of the diet! With The Fast Metabolism Diet, you'll learn healthy eating habits that will improve your physical and mental well-being, no matter how much weight you need to lose. There's plenty of flexibility for working around food allergies or sensitivities, and any other restrictions imposed by medical conditions.

Q. So you're saying real food, not processed is the way to go?

A. We eat only real food on the Fast Metabolism Diet. Nothing fake, nothing with an ingredient list as long as your arm. Fat-free and sugar-free diet junk are off the table too. The diet lists healthy portion sizes too—you’ve got to fuel that metabolism. And you won’t go hungry. In fact, many of my clients are surprised how much food they get to eat.

So say bye-bye to frozen low-cal dinners and fat-free “diet” foods. That’s fake food—it’s just a load of chemicals that drag down your metabolism.

Luckily, real food is really pretty easy. The Fast Metabolism Diet book includes more than 50 super-simple recipes—including family favorites like my Slow-Cooker Chili and Pepperoncini Pork Roast—that you can tailor to your preferences and cooking style.

Q. So what happens after I've reached my goal?

A. Learn how to live the Fast Metabolism lifestyle! Once you create your fast metabolism, you get to use it! Enjoy barbecues, birthday parties, holiday feasts—and really enjoy them. With the Fast Metabolism Diet, you’ll learn how to keep that metabolic fire roaring so you can handle every diet curve life throws your way. By the time you hit your goal weight, you'll have built exactly the habits you need to live a balanced, food-loving life. You don't have to follow the phases anymore (although you can). Just follow the diet's rules for maintenance and remember the true meaning of "DIET": Did I Eat Today?

The Demon Under the Microscope: From Battlefield Hospitals to Nazi Labs, One Doctor's Heroic Search for the World's First Miracle Drug Description

.

The Nazis discovered it. The Allies won the war with it. It conquered diseases, changed laws, and single-handedly launched the era of antibiotics. This incredible discovery was sulfa, the first antibiotic. In The Demon Under the Microscope, Thomas Hager chronicles the dramatic history of the drug that shaped modern medicine.

Sulfa saved millions of lives—among them those of Winston Churchill and Franklin Delano Roosevelt Jr.—but its real effects are even more far reaching. Sulfa changed the way new drugs were developed, approved, and sold; transformed the way doctors treated patients; and ushered in the era of modern medicine. The very concept that chemicals created in a lab could cure disease revolutionized medicine, taking it from the treatment of symptoms and discomfort to the eradication of the root cause of illness.

A strange and colorful story, The Demon Under the Microscope illuminates the vivid characters, corporate strategy, individual idealism, careful planning, lucky breaks, cynicism, heroism, greed, hard work, and the central (though mistaken) idea that brought sulfa to the world. This is a fascinating scientific tale with all the excitement and intrigue of a great suspense novel.

For thousands of years, humans had sought medicines with which they could defeat contagion, and they had slowly, painstakingly, won a few battles: some vaccines to ward off disease, a handful of antitoxins. A drug or two was available that could stop parasitic diseases once they hit, tropical maladies like malaria and sleeping sickness. But the great killers of Europe, North America, and most of Asia—pneumonia, plague, tuberculosis, diphtheria, cholera, meningitis—were caused not by parasites but by bacteria, much smaller, far different microorganisms. Essentials of Epidemiology in Public Health Info

.

Successfully tested in the authors' courses at Boston University and Harvard University, this text combines theory and practice in presenting traditional and new epidemiologic concepts. Broad in scope, the text opens with five chapters covering the basic epidemiologic concepts and data sources. A major emphasis is placed on study design, with separate chapters devoted to each of the three main analytic designs: experimental, cohort, and case-control studies.

Full chapters on bias, confounding, and random error, including the role of statistics in epidemiology, ensure that students are well-equipped with the necessary information to interpret the results of epidemiologic studies. An entire chapter is also devoted to the concept of effect measure modification, an often-neglected topic in introductory textbooks. Up-to-date examples from the epidemiologic literature on diseases of public health importance are provided throughout the book.

The Third Edition is a thorough update that offers:
•New examples, the latest references, and public health statistics.
•Nearly 50 new review questions.
•Updated discussion of certain epidemiologic methods.
•New figures depicting epidemiologic concepts..

Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife Description

.

A scientist’s case for the afterlife…

Thousands of people have had near-death experiences, but scientists have argued that they are impossible. Dr. Eben Alexander was one of those scientists. A highly trained neurosurgeon, Alexander knew that NDEs feel real, but are simply fantasies produced by brains under extreme stress.

Then, Dr. Alexander’s own brain was attacked by a rare illness. The part of the brain that controls thought and emotion—and in essence makes us human—shut down completely. For seven days he lay in a coma. Then, as his doctors considered stopping treatment, Alexander’s eyes popped open. He had come back.

Alexander’s recovery is a medical miracle. But the real miracle of his story lies elsewhere. While his body lay in coma, Alexander journeyed beyond this world and encountered an angelic being who guided him into the deepest realms of super-physical existence. There he met, and spoke with, the Divine source of the universe itself.

Alexander’s story is not a fantasy. Before he underwent his journey, he could not reconcile his knowledge of neuroscience with any belief in heaven, God, or the soul. Today Alexander is a doctor who believes that true health can be achieved only when we realize that God and the soul are real and that death is not the end of personal existence but only a transition.

This story would be remarkable no matter who it happened to. That it happened to Dr. Alexander makes it revolutionary. No scientist or person of faith will be able to ignore it. Reading it will change your life..

Harvey Cushing: A Life in Surgery Info

.

"Your friend, Harvey Cushing, has opened the book of surgery in a new place," William Osler told a mutual acquaintance in early 1901. Indeed, in the early years of the twentieth century, Cushing (1869-1939) almost single-handedly created brain surgery as a specialty. Working at Johns Hopkins University, Harvard University, and Yale University, his rise to become the world's most prominent surgeon - as well as a Pulitzer Prize winner for biography - was an epic of the American Dream. Michael Bliss, one of North America's most pre-eminent professional historians and the leading voice in the field of medical history, has taken up the challenge of documenting this brilliant and complex man in a new biography, Harvey Cushing: A Life in Surgery.Never before has such a detailed and compellingly readable account of a surgeon's life been written. Bliss vividly recounts Cushing's boyhood, his growing interest in surgery and, subsequently, neurosurgery, his travels and attentiveness to European surgical models, the influence of Osler and William Stewart Halsted, and his extraordinary passion and self-confidence in the operating room.Interweaving Cushing's personal story with graphic accounts of his technical prowess, Bliss skillfully charts not only the life of a man, but also the birth and rise of the most esoteric and exotic fields of surgery and endocrinology (in which Cushing became a pioneer). Cushing was also known as an accomplished writer who wrote the influential The Pituary Body and its Disorders as well as a classic biography of his mentor and colleague, Osler. Not surprisingly, Cushing was a driven, relentless, workaholic, and Bliss's work lays plain the hurtful effect this had on his relationship with his wife and daughters, as well as some of his colleagues.A sequel of sorts to Bliss's award-winning biography of Osler, and the completion of his project of describing the rise of North American medicine at the beginning of the modern age, Harvey Cushing: A Life in Surgery breaks new ground in medical biography. It will have a profound and lasting impact of the view of early-twentieth-century medicine and the lives of those who shaped it..

Gut: The Inside Story of Our Body's Most Underrated Organ Info

.

Our gut is almost as important to us as our brain, yet we know very little about how it works. Gut: The Inside Story is an entertaining, informative tour of the digestive system from the moment we raise a tasty morsel to our lips until the moment our body surrenders the remnants to the toilet bowl. No topic is too lowly for the author's wonder and admiration, from the careful choreography of breaking wind to the precise internal communication required for a cleansing vomit. Along the way, the author provides practical advice, such as the best ways to sit on the toilet to have a comfortable bowel movement, how clean your kitchen should be for optimum gut health, and how different laxatives work. She tells stories of gut bacteria that can lead to obesity, autoimmune diseases, or even suicide, and she discusses the benefits of dietary supplements, such as probiotics.

This book is a fascinating primer for anyone interested in how our ideas about the gut are changing in the light of cutting-edge scientific research. In the words of the author, "We live in an era in which we are just beginning to understand just how complex the connections are between us, our food, our pets, and the microscopic world in, on, and around us. We are gradually decoding processes that we used to believe were part of our inescapable destiny."

Savage Will: The Daring Escape of Americans Trapped Behind Nazi Lines Info

.

In the tradition of incredible true stories from The Great Escape to Argo, Savage Will recounts a tale of survival, daring, and evasion behind enemy lines: that of American medics and nurses stranded for two months in Nazi-occupied Albania.

In 1943, men and women of the 807th Medical Air Evacuation Squadron boarded a routine flight from Sicily to the Italian mainland to care for wounded soldiers. En route, their plane drifted hundreds of miles off course and crash-landed in remote mountainous Albania.

The unarmed Americans were trapped hundreds of blizzard-plagued miles from Allied lines, in a country torn apart by rival bands of pro- and anti-German guerrillas. Hunted by German soldiers, the castaways relied on what one survivor called their “savage will” to elude their enemy and find their way to freedom.

What followed is the most thrilling untold story of World War II—a saga reaching from President Roosevelt and top Allied intelligence officials to a host of brave Albanian Resistance fighters, the British and U.S. Mediterranean air forces,  and the dashing English lieutenant and the tenacious American captain sent behind enemy lines to carry out a heroic rescue..

Bioethics in America: Origins and Cultural Politics Info

.

In Bioethics in America, Tina Stevens challenges the view that the origins of the bioethics movement can be found in the 1960s, a decade mounting challenges to all variety of authority. Instead, Stevens sees bioethics as one more product of a "centuries-long cultural legacy of American ambivalence toward progress," and she finds its modern roots in the responsible science movement that emerged following detonation of the atomic bomb.

Rather than challenging authority, she says, the bioethics movement was an aid to authority, in that it allowed medical doctors and researchers to proceed on course while bioethicists managed public fears about medicine's new technologies. That is, the public was reassured by bioethical oversight of biomedicine; in reality, however, bioethicists belonged to the same mainstream that produced the doctors and researchers whom the bioethicists were guiding.

Notes on Nursing: What it Is, and What it Is Not La revue

.

Neither in my own nursing education at the B.S.N. nor at the M.S.N. level, was it even suggested, much less required, that I read any of Florence Nightingale's original writings. Even as a nurse educator for over 30 years, I did not require my students to read her writings either. After reading this book, I now believe it is a void in the education of a nurse not to read at least some of the writings of the founder of modern day nursing. Notes on Nursing would be an excellent choice. This book introduces and discusses, to some degree, many of the concepts nurses have been dealing with since before my entrance into the field in the 1969, and certainly ever since. Included in these pages are concepts such as holistic health, home health, alternative therapies, health prevention and maintenance, the role of women in nursing and in everyday life, nursing administration, leadership, communications skills, mind/body and body/mind relationships. Her theory on the use of light, fresh air, warmth, cleanliness, quiet, and the proper selection and administration of diet is also well explored. Some of the comments are unexpected and very insightful. - Anita S. Kessler, R.N., M.S.N., M.Ed. Florence Nightingale was the founder of the modern nursing profession. She single handedly revolutionized medical treatment with her writings on nursing. Anita S. Kessler is an R. N. With Master Degrees in both nursing and education. She has been an educator of nurses for more than thirty years..

Wanting to start the Ketogenic Diet but don't know how to begin

This book contains proven steps and strategies on how to use the low-carb, high-fat Ketogenic Diet as a weight loss method. It is one of the most effective diets for weight loss available today. It’s easy to follow and offers many health benefits, too. This ebook offers a guide on what to do and what not to do in a Ketogenic Diet, how to create diet plans and how to kick-start a workout routine.

You MUST understand that there are strict guidelines to follow and in order to follow a diet plan properly. You have to understand the rationale behind doing certain things. At the start, get it right, only change it accordingly to your likings once you are familiar with it.

Dining out while on a Keto Diet? NO PROBLEM

Of course, we can't set a rule that all people following the Ketogenic Diet have to stay at home everyday and cook their own meals. Its obvious that we all have social commitments where we dine out with our family or friends. This is a common problem Ketogenic Diet practitioners face but certainly there is a way around it.

Weight loss with no excercise explained
